Iberville Parish

February 22nd, 2008

With over twenty million records in their database and only four admins to maintain them and handle the barrage of fixes that are submitted on the forums, the Find A Grave administrators came up with an idea to make things easier on everyone - County Keepers.

The concept of a county keeper is that one member volunteers to "clean-up" a certain county's cemetery listings.  They aren't allowed to do anything with the entries in the cemeteries, but are tasked with providing addresses, GPS coordinates, and cemetery sign or gate photographs.  More importantly, County Keepers find and merge duplicate entries of cemeteries.

To do this, the C.K. compiles the required fixes, changes, additions, and moves and sends them in an email, with a corresponding code number, directly to an admin.  Normally, a change would be posted to the forums and gotten to in due order (sometimes months or even years).  The C.K., once appointed, has direct access to an admin with editing capabilities and their corrections take precedence.

It's a lot of work, but very rewarding.  I applied for - and was accepted as - the County Keeper (or, in my case, the Parish Keeper) for my native Iberville Parish.  I simply cannot wait to get started.

To record my updates and changes to the Iberville Parish Cemeteries on FAG, I have included a new category called, naturally, Parish Keeper to the blog.  Through here, I will be sharing my work and adventures updating and "cleaning up" the Iberville Parish cemetery listings.

I simply can't wait to get started!

Hello! It is wonderful to see someone from Iberville Parish on-line. Finally, after months of subscribing to Google Alerts... it pays off! I've added you to my list of Louisiana Bloggers and cited you as the Iberville Parish Keeper. I love Find A Grave, too. Have you seen the new Saving Graves website?

Thank you so much! It's always a pleasure to find those that are, also, hard at work to preserve the past and record the present (for the future) of our beloved parish! I'm a Maringouin native, and travel back to the area to visit my family often.

I don't think I've seen Saving Graves - I'd love to check it out, though!
