Back Among The Graves

November 8th, 2007

Now that the relentless heat and humidity of Louisiana summer has passed, I am able to resume my strolls among the tombs. I have missed graving immensely, but decided to wait until better weather afforded me the opportunity to enjoy any outings I decided to make.

I took my boyfriend along this time, and - for the first time - he said he understood the draw of graving. Our little excursion took place on a gorgeous autumn Sunday - a cool breeze blew through the grounds, softly ringing wind chimes that people have hung in the huge oaks and fruitful pecan trees that dot Greenoaks Memorial Park in Baton Rouge. It was peaceful and relaxing; a quiet, thoughtful trip among the many and varied headstones that marked the lives of those gone before us.

There was absolute serenity and beauty as we sat on a concrete bench for a few reflective moments in the section known as "Babyland"; where ill-starred toddlers and infants lay in silent repose. We counted our blessings for our precious, healthy nieces, nephews, and godchildren and contemplated soundless prayers for the tender young buried around us and their bereaved loved ones.

We left with a sense of peace and thankfulness - a relaxed day that reminded us not to take anything - or anyone - for granted. It's something I cannot quite explain unless you've experienced it yourself. It was the perfect day, and way, to get back into my most favorite hobby.
